Appio

IRPINIA CAMPI TAURASINI DOC

2017

In the middle valley of the Calore, between Luogosano and Sant’Angelo all’Esca, the Aglianico vine has always been cultivated. From its red berries, carefully selected manually, vinified and aged in ceramic amphorae, Appio is born. It is the name that Cavalier Angelo Pepe chose to pay homage to the Appian Way, which connected ancient Rome to today’s Brindisi. The queen of roads, built by Appio Claudio Cieco from the mid-third century BC, crossed the ancient Roman colony of Aeclanum, in Irpinia, allowing the transit of goods, men and the fusion of cultures.

Color

Intense ruby red color with purple reflections.

Aroma

Notes of red fruits such as currants, blueberries and dark cherry, accompanied by mineral notes and slightly spicy hints.

Bouquet

Wine with a very fine, fruity, savory entrance, with a good minerality. Full and enveloping, thanks to a soft structure, with good presence of fine and elegant tannins. The sip ends with persistence.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, at the beginning of November, from the vineyard planted in 1970 and bred with the ancient and typical Starseta system. The grapes, destemmed, are fermented and macerated in amphora for 20 days, with manual pumping over and punching down

Food and wine pairings

The elegance of Appio makes the wine extremely versatile in combinations, being able to serenely accompany the meal starting from hot appetizers based on vegetables and meat, to move on to the first courses, with well-seasoned pasta, red sauces based on meat, to get to the second courses of medium structure, such as, for example, a cut of beef, or even medium-aged cheeses. Appio marries very well dishes with truffles. Serving temperature 16-18°C.
